Agapanthus orientalis is naturally found in South Africa growing in open sunny to semi shaded positions on well drained fertile moist soils. It is an easy plant to cultivate and tolerates a wide range of conditions. It is grown in containers or planted in borders and mass planted as an understorey around trees.
